Wage inequality in a dual economy ∗

چکیده
This paper presents necessary and sufficient conditions for unambiguous changes in wage inequality in a dual economy, based on analysis of the entire Lorenz curve. These conditions are then used to analyze the distributional consequences of various types of economic growth. In particular, it is shown that capital accumulation or technical progress in agriculture is likely to reduce wage inequality, but the effects of development in non-agriculture are typically ambiguous. The paper also discusses the implications of this analysis for the Kuznets curve. J.E.L. classiÞcation: D30, O15

Tasks, Occupations, and Wage Inequality in an Open Economy
This paper documents and theoretically explains a nexus between globalization and residual wage inequality through internal labor market reorganization. Combining time-varying within-occupation task information from representative German labor force surveys with linked plant–worker data for Germany, we establish three interrelated facts: (1) Larger plants and exporters organize production into ...
متن کاملInformation economy and inequality: Wage polarization, unemployment, and occupation transition in Taiwan since 1980
This paper examines whether Taiwan’s economic inequality has worsened as Taiwan has evolved into an information economy, a transformation which began around 1980. The paper explores this relationship by investigating three specific research questions. First, has there been a rise in wage inequality in Taiwan since 1980; and if so, what are the sources of this rise in inequality? Second, has the...
متن کاملAggregate Reallocation Shocks and the Dynamics of Occupational Mobility and Wage Inequality
This paper presents a dynamic model of structural unemployment and occupational choice in which an economy is subjected to aggregate reallocation shocks. Reallocation shocks, which change the relative labour productivity across occupations, drive variation in the distribution of workers across occupations. The wage paid to workers in a given occupation depends on its labour productivity and the...

The Evolution of Inequality, Heterogeneity and Uncertainty in Labor Earnings in the U.S. Economy A large empirical literature documents a rise in wage inequality in the American economy. It is silent on whether the increase in inequality is due to greater heterogeneity in the components of earnings that are predictable by agents or whether it is due to greater uncertainty faced by agents. متن کاملInequality and Employment in a Dual Economy: Enforcement of Labor Regulation in Brazil
This paper studies the impact of an increase in the enforcement of labor regulations on unemployment and inequality, using city level data from Brazil. We find that stricter enforcement (affecting the payment of mandated benefits to formal workers) leads to: higher unemployment, less income inequality, a higher proportion of formal employment, and a lower formal wage premium. Our results are co...
